Law Society Welcomes New President Linda Lee
Northampton lawyer Linda Lee has been inaugurated as the Law Society president during the Society's AGM.
The new president has come to the role with a promise to fight the corner of solicitors as the profession faces fresh challenges in the coming year.
Linda, a specialist in clinical negligence and coronial law, has been a Council Member for Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland since 2003 and is involved in the activities of the local law societies.
She has juggled a very successful career with raising her three daughters, and is passionate about using her vast experience over the last fifteen years to ensuring every solicitor can achieve their potential to thrive in the new legal services market.
Speaking of the challenges ahead in her presidential year, Linda Lee said:
"In my year as president, I will promote the excellence of the profession, the importance of our values and our ethical standards and our role at the heart of society and commerce."
"There was a time when the legal world changed in a stately and measured fashion. Traumatic changes in the law only occurred as the result of war, civil unrest or industrial revolution."
"Today, we have faced a rate of change never before seen, we have had to adapt to ever greater volumes of information transmitted in real time, rapid changes in practices brought about to meet the demands of a global market and we have been asked to find instant solutions to increasingly complex problems."
"We have faced an onslaught of legislation and social change, the best of which has undoubtedly been the increasing opportunities and a celebration of diversity in society which has been reflected in our profession."
Linda began her career training in a trade union firm, Hopkins based in Mansfield, before moving to Shoosmiths in Northampton.
Linda was formerly an in-house consultant for Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA), a charity promoting better patient safety and justice for people affected by medical accidents.
She lectures in clinical negligence and coronial law across the country, and was previously editor of the AvMA section of Clinical Risk a specialist medico-legal publication.
Linda also has undertaken notable and extensive pro-bono work for the Road Victim’s Trust in Bedford.
The new president will be supported by vice president John Wotton and deputy vice president Lucy Scott-Moncrieff and also the representative Board Chairs David Taylor, Michael Garson, Christina Blacklaws and Andrew Caplan.
Linda says professional solidarity has never been more important and the profession must speak with one voice to, Government, Regulators, Insurers and the society it serves.
"In return all solicitors must know that they can count on all of us – national and local law societies, Boards and Council to fight their corner," she adds.
